While at celebration V, the creators of the chivecast put together a show during the convention. During the room sales, which ended up being more of a hall sale, they interviewed a few collectors. I happened to be one of the lucky ones. A snippet of the show with my interview, and my friend Chris, can be downloaded here.

Here is the one picture I took during the sale, so you can get an idea of the chaos that was going on. Also, next to it, is a picture of the tattoo Chris got at the show. I don’t think the Florida humidity was helping things that night, but it was certainly worth it as he won the tattoo contest the last day.
Each day I attended 3 of the 4 panels, so we almost had a complete set. Just before the last panel began we traded a few of our doubles and got to the point of just needing one box. Luckily Sarah found someone, so we were able to complete the set.

One event that many collectors look forward too are the room sales. They’ve gotten so big that the haven’t taken place in actual rooms the last two conventions. Basically collectors bring a bunch of stuff to sell at the convention and then a night or two these sales go on at one of the main hotels. This is the only picture I managed to take as I wanted to make sure i didn’t miss anything cool. There was a lot of stuff that I would have liked, but I only picked up one item. It was an Australian Luke Jedi card back to go with my focus. I feel that I got a pretty fair price for a card that doesn’t come up for sale very often.

A friend alerted me that the Provo ShopKo for some odd reason had some older figures. I decided to check things out and sure enough they had a very strange assortment of figures with the oldest dating back to 1996. That’s roughly 14 years ago! ShopKo has the worst prices on figures and of course they were asking almost full price for them.

Here’s a picture of them all lined up in the store.

From left to right we have POTF2 Imperial Gunner (1996), Episode 1 Jar Jar Binks (1999), Revenge of the Sith Kit Fisto (2005), Thirtieth Anniversary Collection Mustafar Lava Droid(2007), Legacy Collection Darth Sideous (2009), and Legacy Collection Vader (2010)

and just below the figures, the one thing I did buy, is the 3D Jabbas Palace from 1998.

Basically I have this script set to run every day and it backs up the mysql databases on my server. After I made the upgrade, the script would run, create the backup files, but it would not email them to me. I have been casually looking for a fix over the last couple of months, but hadn’t found anything.

Well today I checked out the project page and a new version had been released. I was hoping this would fix the problem. I reconfigured the new script and ran it, but got the following error:

Can’t stat myaddress@mail.com: No such file or directory
myaddress@mail.com: unable to attach file.

I figured that was better than before as I didn’t get any error messages with the old version. I decided to look in the support forum and found a post from someone with the same problem. Here is what they did to fix it and it worked for me too.

Since i already had mutt installed, googled for the problem, but didnt find any like this. Then i looked through the script and changed this:

from:

mutt -s "${ERRORNOTE} MySQL Backup Log and SQL Files for ${HOST} - ${DATE}" ${BACKUPFILES} ${MAILADDR} < ${LOGFILE} #send via mutt

to:

mutt -s "${ERRORNOTE} MySQL Backup Log and SQL Files for ${HOST} - ${DATE}" ${MAILADDR} ${BACKUPFILES} < ${LOGFILE} #send via mutt

so all i did was switched ${BACKUPFILES} with ${MAILADDR} .

It is working all right now.

It seemed like forever back in December when I booked plane tickets and hotel reservations.

I’ve been doing a few things in preparation for the event. The first thing I wanted to do was beef up my camera gear a bit, so hopefully I can get some good pictures of things going on. At a convention like this, I feel that a backpack is an important item to have. I had a previous backpack which was great for holding a laptop, but didn’t have the compartments for a DSLR camera and lenses.

Here’s the backpack I decided on and bought a couple weeks ago.

The bottom half of the bag opens up with a compartment to hold a camera body, a couple lenses, and I’ve also got my flash in there. The nice thing is that the zipper opens up from the side so I can actually just release one of the straps over my shoulder and get right to the compartment to get to the camera quick without putting the bag down.

The other thing I wanted was a laptop compartment. This bag has that too and will hold a 15″ laptop. For celebration though I’m going to see how it goes with just the iPad. I figured that will give me a little extra room in that compartment for paper items that I get at the con. I’ve also got a card reader for the iPad, so I can dump my photos on there when it gets full.

The top compartment also opens with a good place to store snacks and things of that nature to keep me going during the day.

This time, with the iPad, I’ve taken all documents that I would need ie hotel, airline, maps, etc in digital form. Here’s a shot of the exhibitor floor map loaded up.

It’s going to be here now before we know it.

I’ve picked up on several podcasts that I enjoy listening to while working out, so I thought I would share my list in case anyone wants to check them out. Now you don’t need an i device to listen to a podcast as they all provide an mp3 that you can download to listed to on your computer or other music player. The only advantage with using iTunes on these, is that it automatically downloads the new episode for you and puts it on your i device the next time you sync. Now on to the list.

The Chivecast: This is the only podcast out there right now that focuses strictly on vintage Star Wars collecting. It is monthly and was started roughly 6 months ago by a couple of collectors on Rebelscum. It is hosted as the official podcast of The Star Wars Collectors Archive. Early on, they even had some discussion on U grading and had collectors view their thoughts on the U grade.

Star Wars Action News: This is a weekly podcast on Star Wars collecting. It focuses a bit more on modern items (currently in stores), but they do have a vintage segment every now and then. They cover a wide range of items from toys, statues, books, etc. Even though I don’t collect a lot of that stuff anymore, I still find it enjoyable to listen to and keep up with the current news in Star Wars.

Now Playing: A movie review podcast put on by some of the same people that do Star Wars action news. This one is a lot of fun in that they occasionally review new movies, but also focus a lot on older movies too. They recently did retrospectives on the Predator movies and Karate Kid movies leading up to the new releases. For warning this one does have explicit language, but usually only when reviewing an R rated film.

We Have Communicators: (formerly iPhone Alley) This is a podcast that covers all i device related news each week, so pretty much anything iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, and iOS.

Macbreak Weekly: This show is hosted by Leo Laporte that some might know from his Tech TV days. It is a weekly show that is recorded on Tuesdays that cover all things Mac. They cover the weeks news and any other fun topics that come up. I find Leo to be pretty unbiased toward Apple as he is someone who covers all areas of tech.

Engadget Podcast: One of my favorite tech news sites. They discuss pretty much everything and anything coming out in the tech industry. One week they may talk about phones and another week the focus could be on cameras. They also get in to some pretty fun arguments at times.
