Poof!

atx_power_supplyThis morning just shortly after the alarm went off I heard another alarm in my office. It was my UPS battery backup beeping at me. I went in and could smell the lovely smell of burnt electronics. It looks like the power supply blew up on the new server and tripped the UPS. The site is now temporarily running again on the old server. I restored my posts using last nights database backup, but obviously I don’t have the photos for those. I should have a power supply on Saturday to fit back into the new server and hopefully will be up and running again on that machine.

HV40 Announced

Canon has announced the HV40 camcorder. By looking at the specs they seem very similar to the hv30. The main difference is native 24p which means you can capture now directly at 24 frames per second. WIth the HV20/30 you had to capture in hdv 60i with 30 frames per second and then remove the pulldown with a separate program that removed the extra frames inserted into the capture. Other than that a lot of the specs still look similar to my HV20. The HV30 added 30p mode that mine doesn’t have and then now the HV40 with the new native 24p.

I would like to upgrade at some point, but as of right now I still would rather invest some money into accessories instead. This semester for example I need to put together a portable green screen for my senior projects class. I was planning on working on that over the break, but haven’t taken the time. I hope to get started on it sometime in the next couple weeks though and will post some tests.

All the specs on the HV40 can be read on canon’s site It will be released in March this year.

Happy New Year

fire-workWell it is now 2009 and Christmas is over. Last year really flew by fast. I think I finally picked a new theme for the site. It is called Coffee Desk. I thought it was pretty cool since I have a few of the items pictured in the theme including the iPhone and the Cruzer flash drive where the search is located. Also, during the break, I switched the server over to a little faster computer when I was in St. George. The server is now running a 3.0 celeron instead of a 700 mhz Pentium 3 and now has 1 gigabyte of RAM instead of 512. In a future post I’ll explain how I moved the entire system to a new computer. It was actually fairly easy to do.

Dr. Pepper Delivers on Promise

Looks like complaining sometime does pay off. Last month Dr. Pepper promised a free one on them for the release of Guns N Roses new album. Well their site was completely unresponsive the whole time and everyone I know that tried did not get a chance to register for the coupon. After the day was over the site came back up and was working normal. I know several people that think Dr. Pepper did this on purpose, but I personally think it was a matter of them not expecting how much traffic this would generate.

Anyway, I myself never did get a chance to register for the coupon either, but after the site went back up I decided to send customer service an email. I just basically stated that I felt I did not get a chance for a free Dr. Pepper and they promised everyone in the U.S. a free one. Surprisingly, I received a response shortly after saying they would send me a coupon. A couple of days ago I received an envelope with the coupon. Dr. Pepper delivered and I’m glad they did. Those that know me very well know that I’ve given them a lot of my money over the years. ;)
