WordPress 2.7 RC2

Yesterday the second release candidate for 2.7 was released. I haven’t noticed any changes since RC1, but that makes sense since most things now are just little bug fixes where it is this far along.

I did have one little issue with uploading photos. When I would upload a photo I would only have the option for the original size and the radio buttons for thumbnail, medium, and large were grayed out. These options worked fine in the 2.6 versions of wordpress. After updating to RC2 and still having the issue I figured it might be something on my end.

I did a little research and found out it had to do with the php gd image library. I think I had an older version on my server, so with the magic of Ubuntu I used the command sudo apt-get install php5-gd I then restarted apache and voila it worked again. I’m guessing something was changed in 2.7 to require the upgrade. There isn’t any documentation about the change on their site, so I posted on their message board what I had to do as others had reported the same thing.

I’m glad that I was able to get that fixed. Everything else appears to be working as it should be.

Here is a new video that was recently posted showing off the dashboard and some of the new features. I’m working on editing my theme to add some of the new functionality that users will actually see. I’ll update once I get to that point.

Secret Santa

This year I decided to participate in the rebelscum secret santa. They have done this for a few years now and I thought it would be fun to finally participate this year. There were 30 participants and names are drawn randomly. The only rule is that the item has to be at least worth $30. I sent out mine a couple of weeks ago. Today mine arrived and it looks like my secret santa is from the UK. The package did have a name on there, but I haven’t been able to put it together with their rebelscum id. That is fine though as we will find out who our secret Santa’s are in the beginning in January. It is really tempting to just go ahead and open the package, but I will see if I will try and wait until Christmas. We are only a few weeks away now anyway and it will be fun to open up something vintage Star Wars that day.

Here is a pic of the box that arrived

WordPress 2.7 RC1

On December 1st WordPress 2.7 Release Candidate 1 was released. I have been following the development for some time, but didn’t want to put the site on beta software. I decided that since it has reached Release Candidate status and will be final probably in a week or two to give it a try on some of my other sites. I really like the new interface and overall look that I upgraded the main site here yesterday. So far I haven’t had any problems with my plugins or themes, so I feel that is pretty lucky since this version from what I understand is a complete rewrite. I’ll post more as I find out about new additions. Below is a comparison screenshot showing the old dashboard and the new one.

Almost There

After having to book an appointment 2 weeks in advance I  was finally able to meet with my counselor at UVU. I was thinking next semester I would be taking about 10 credits to graduate. Because of some changes with the degree, some of my classes were not showing up on my degree evaluation. My counselor said I just need to meet with her again in January when all the degree changes have taken place and she is going to push them through for me. It looks like with that part taken care of I only need to take 6 credits in the Spring to graduate. That was really great news to me. So basically next semester I am just taking Senior Projects 2 and a presentations class. I’m glad with this so I can focus more time on the Senior Project and at the same time it should hopefully be a somewhat relaxed semester to end on. As for this semester we only have a week left of classes, so I am trying to get everything in and ready for final projects. I think that will be what this weekend will consist of mostly.

Black Friday Madness

We survived another Black Friday. This year there really wasn’t anything in particular that I needed, so we didn’t camp out all night or anything like that. Sarah mainly wanted lots of movies, so we did get to Wal-Mart an hour before they opened. I think she ended up with somewhere around 9 movies and the cost was under $25. Not bad if I say so myself. I myself picked up the latest Indiana Jones for $9, Interview with the Vampire for $2, and at Toys R Us a guitar for Guitar Hero at $10. I was surprised at that price Toys R Us still had some left by the time we got there.

The one part that I really hate about Black Friday is how rude people can be. This is supposed to mark the first day of the Christmas season which is generally a time that people are nicer to each other. Instead you get people pushing, shoving, and yelling at each other just to get a good deal. The stores bring this upon themselves by only getting a handful of the big items that people want. I couldn’t believe it when I read that a man was trampled to death at a Walmart in N.Y. and two people shot to death at a Toys R Us in CA. Stuff like that really makes me sick. And it was all done in the name of getting a bargain.

I myself try and be extra friendly at this time especially to the workers. I know I would absolutely hate this day if I worked in the retail industry. If you get the deal great and if not many times you can wait until after Christmas and get the same item for about the same price. Anyway I do enjoy Blackk Friday and look forward to it, but many people need to not take it so seriously. It is just stuff that can be purchased later if you really need it.

Hope everyone has a good Cyber Monday.
