Some Site Changes

I’ve noticed the site has been taking quite a bit of time to load lately. I have done a few optimizations to help things out. I have now made it so the front page only shows the last 5 posts instead of 10. That way the front page has less images and such to load.

I also installed the plugin wp-cache this plugin “works by caching Worpress pages and storing them in a static file for serving future requests directly from the file rather than loading and compiling the whole PHP code and then building the page from the database. WP-Cache allows to serve hundred of times more pages per second, and to reduce the response time from several tenths of seconds to less than a millisecond.”

I’m hoping these changes will help. I might have to see about upgrading to a beefier server. I plan to test things out with the one in St. George when we are down there in June. It has a much faster processor, but the same amount of RAM.

I have been using this site to test the load times. Original it said 23 seconds for the front page to load. i now have it down to roughly 8.5 seconds which is quite an improvement.

update: I just found a derivative of wp-cache called wp-super-cache. It appears to have a lot more optimization and options. It even helps so sites do not suffer the digg effect.

Saga Museum Pre-Order

I’ve been following the progress of this book for some time now. I decided to visit the site to see if there were any updates and it looks like the preorder is up now. This book looks like it will be the most comprehensive collecting book ever. It covers pretty much every Star Wars toy related item from 1977-2007. The first 30 years of Star Wars. While visiting the site I found out it is actually going to be a two volume set. They are limited to only 5000 copies and will be shipped out tentatively in October. I hope to get my preorder in the next month or so. It is $75 plus shipping which probably isn’t too bad for a 700 page full color book. The website for the book is http://www.thesagamuseum.com/ and the author Todd DeMartino is a regular forum member at rebelscum. His collection was featured at the 2nd Star Wars Celebration in Indiana. I wish I could have attended. A collection of pictures from that event can be seen here

My Memorial Day Ebay Score

I’ve been wanting to get a copy of Zelda: A link to the past for sometime now. Mario’s at the Towne Centre mall usually has a copy but they want $17.99 for just the cartridge. That is actually comparible to most ebay auctions though. Last night one was ending that included the original box and paperwork. Those usually sell in the $20-$30 range. There was only one bid, so I figured why not put in a snipe at $15.75 just for fun. If I get it great if not no big deal. Anyway I checked a little while later and I actually won it for $12.50. I’m guessing I got lucky since most people were out vacationing yesterday, so it managed to go under the radar. I look forward to going through this game again over the summer. Below is the infamous Japanese commercial. It is pretty silly, but at the same time fun to watch. It is then followed by one of our U.S. commercials. Here is the link to the ebay auction

The article can be read at here. Also, there is a video interview which can be watched at http://www.dallasnews.com/video/index.html?nvid=247525&shu=1

Nintendo Strikes Back

Here we are with the followup to the Genesis article. The Super Nintendo was released shortly after I got the Genesis. After a few months of owning the Genesis I noticed a lot of the games while fun were not quite as challenging as the old Nintendo games were. With the release of the Super Nintendo many of my old favorites were brought to the 16-bit format.

The system included a new Mario game which I knew was fun having played the Super Famicom (Japanese Super Nintendo) version at a local arcade. Also, there was Super Castlevania IV which was another favorite series of mine on the original Nintendo. Finally, there was mention of a new Zelda game coming out the next year. I couldn’t pass up all that so I sold my Genesis around October or November of ’91 and bought a Super Nintendo.

The system was amazing. Hardware wise it was superior over the Genesis. The Genesis could display 64 different colors on the screen at the same time while the Super Nintendo could do 256. This led to games that looked a lot more richer and complex. Also the Super Nintendo had a 16-bit audio processor on it’s own which led to amazing symphonic music in games that none of the previous systems could compare to. Because of these differences the games that were released on both consoles always looked better on the Super Nintendo.

Despite these differences Sega was able to have pretty close to half the market until the mid 90′s. The deal breaker though was with the release of Donkey Kong Country. This game had amazing graphics at the time with detailed pre rendered 3D characters. Also, with the release of Donkey Kong Country came the first ad where Nintendo actually fought back against Sega. Sega the whole time had been throwing commercials against Nintendo with slogans like “Genesis does what Nintendont” and saying the Genesis had Blast processing to make games faster and that the Super Nintendo was slow.

The release of Donkey Kong Country is considered where the shift was made in Nintendo’s favor and Nintendo won the 16-bit console war.  I don’t know if we’ll ever see anything quite like that again. All the current consoles have their own niche market and they don’t have the constant mudslinging that went on back in those days.

Here is the list of games on the Super Nintendo that I remember completing followed by a pic of my boxed Super Nintendo, one of the first Super Nintendo commercials I remember, and the Donkey Kong Country commercial.
