Botcon 2008

This weekend is Botcon in Cincinnati Ohio. Details have surfaced from the Hasbro panel with images of new product coming out this summer and later this year. The coolest thing for me is around Thanksgiving they are going to do another reissue of Optimus Prime to kick off the 25th Anniversary which is next year. The Optimus Prime comes with a reprint of the first Transformers comic and a DVD with the first 3 episodes of the Cartoon. I already have 3 Optimus Primes, so I probably should pass but I will just have to wait and see. A few online stores are having sales for Botcon too. I am debating on wether to pick up Masterpiece Megatron. I have wanted the figure for about a year now and he is $20 off.

Server Update Done

Well I decided to jump the gun and go ahead and do the server update at work over ssh. Everything appears to have gone smoothly. I just have to do a reboot when I get home. I would do it now but I never found a way in the bios to make it boot without a keyboard attached. Today was also the 100th day of uptime, so it is kind of sad that it will start over again. Overall I think the update took about an hour and a half and the only questions I had to answer was wether or not to overwrite my apache config files. Not bad considering it just came out yesterday. The media center at work running the desktop version took about 6 hours to download all the updates yesterday.

Ubuntu 8.04 Released Today

Today the latest version of Ubuntu was released 8.04 Hardy Heron. Ubuntu’s slogan is “Linux for Human beings” which I would have to say they are doing a good job at it. The desktop version is very easy to install, comes with most of the programs your average user would need, and is easy to update. A great review of the installation process can be read about on linuxformat.co.uk. You can get the cd at www.ubuntu.com The great thing is the cd is a live cd, so you can boot your computer with it and try it out without having to install or erase your hard drive.

I plan to probably update the server over the weekend, so there might be a little downtime on Saturday.

I’ve Still Got It

Today I finished my last final. Hooray! Also, some parts came for a computer that I am building for a friend. It has probably been a year or so since I last built one. Everything came together without a problem. This was my first time building a machine with a Core Duo processor. I really like how now there are no more pins to bend on the processors. Luckily that really only happened to me once in the 486 days. This was also my first time building a system with a micro atx motherboard. I usually prefer to have all the expansion possible, but my friend wanted something small. Here is a pic of the machine next to a monitor for comparison. The system has the following specs:

Intel 2.4 GHZ Core 2 Duo Processor

Asus P5GC-MX Motherboard

4 GB RAM

500 GB Hard Drive

Asus 18x DVD Burner with Lightescribe

Sony DVD Burn (from old computer)

Asus Geforce 8500 GT

Weird Things You Buy As A Collector

Today I was so excited to see that my shipping box came. Yes just a cardboard box. So what is so special about this box? Well this box is circa 1985 and contained my favorite figure. Luke Skywalker as a Jedi Knight from Return of the Jedi. The box contained 96 figures on card. I wish it would have been full too. The buy it now on ebay was only $5.99 and generally any of these shipping boxes sell from $50-$100 depending on what era they are from and on top of that it was for my favorite figure. Last year after I finished my loose collection of the vintage figures I decided to focus on variations of this figure. Here is a group shot of what I have so far going from left to right we have: 65 (figures on back) carded Luke, Luke Sealed in Kenner Baggie (how they came from department stores like J.C. Penny, Sears, Montgomery Ward, etc), Made in Taiwan Blue Saber painted face sewn cape, The Shipping Box, Made in Taiwan Green Saber Molded Face snap cape, No Country Origin green saber sewn cape(my childhood figure), 77 back carded Luke. Seems like a lot of Lukes, but this actually just skims the surface of how many variations are out there. I still plan to add a Hong Kong Country of Origin Luke, 79 Back Luke, and Power of the Force with Coin Luke. Yes I am such a nerd,
