RIP Netscape

AOL has announced that Netscape will officially die on February 1st, 2008. I am not surprised since AOL hasn’t really taken good care of Netscape. AOL bought Netscape in 1998 and that was probably around the last time the I actually used it as my browser of choice. I remember when we first got signed up with Infowest in St. George. I downloaded Netscape for WIndows 3.11 from a BBS, so we would be all ready to go. I believe that was version 1.2 or something like that. It was at least a little while before Internet Explorer came on the scene. I think had Microsoft actually played fair Netscape might still be a decent browser. At least now Firefox is a excellent alternative.

  1. Netscape couldn’t display inline JPGs. You needed a helper application to view them. … Oh well. I still can’t believe I lived with 14.4 for two+ years. I LOVED the speed at Pine View.

I had a lot of fun selling my “new” and “exclusive” Cable TV Descrambler Report for $5.95. … Cash, Check, or Money Order only please.

Bye Netscape. Thanks for the memories.

  2. Ha ha I forgot about having a separate viewer for Jpegs. Good old Lview is what I used back then. I think I had 14.4 for about 2 years as well. There is no way you could get by with that speed now.
